Returning to Work

Having a baby is the most wonderful experience, but having to go back to work afterward, is not always as pleasant. New moms have so many mixed emotions when going back to work, but here are some ways to help return to work after having a baby.

1. Don't Feel Guilty

Many new moms feel guilty when it is time to go back to work. They feel like they are abandoning their new baby for a paycheck. Never feel guilty for bringing home a salary. Something else that may be considered is how much is brought home each month versus how much childcare costs. It may be discovered that mom may just end up staying home with her baby since it is not worth it to be away if their salary does not exceed childcare expenses.

2. Be Happy

Moms must remember that being happy is a choice and going back to work happy will be easier. Moms should think of the adult time they are getting which is so very important for new moms. There are many women that lose themselves after having children, so having that adult time should be on the top of mom's list.

3. Separate Yourself

Many moms will spend time thinking of their new babies while they are at work. Try diving into work to make the days go quicker and then spend quality time at home with baby after you get off at 5 o'clock.

4. Talk to Your Boss

Many women should discuss different options with their bosses in regards to breastfeeding and work schedule time change. If mom is breastfeeding, their boss should be made aware that they will need to take extra breaks during the day in order to pump. In addition, if mom is up all night with the baby and is going to be exhausted right away in the morning, perhaps she can work a different shift than she normally used to.

5. Plan for Part-Time

Instead of delving into full-time work right away, maybe going in a few times per week to get back into the swing of things again is just what you need. Your boss may even let you take work home with you.

6. Bring Photos

If a mother finds herself missing her baby while away at work, she should bring photos of the baby to look at during those times. There is nothing wrong with missing your new baby when starting back at work, so bring lots of pictures.

7. Pack a Healthy Lunch

Women who return to work immediately may not have time to workout and drop excess pregnancy weight

. Make sure to pack a healthy lunch, so you don't find yourself keeping the weight on and eating unhealthy at restaurants with other co-workers.
