RFLP

Biology Q&A: What are RFLPs?

RFLPs are restriction fragment length polymorphisms, which are variations in the short base sequences where restriction enzymes can cut DNA. By cutting two different DNA molecules with the same restriction enzyme, scientists can compare the lengths of the fragments; two identical molecules will have identical fragments, while two similar molecules may be largely alike, with perhaps a few differences in fragment size. These differences in restriction fragment lengths are called polymorphisms and are used in all types of DNA typing.
