Biography

American producer and production executive Richard D. Zanuck, the son of illustrious production executive Darryl F. Zanuck, began his career in the story department of 20th Century Fox while still in college. Later he became the vice president of Darryl F. Zanuck Productions, in charge of the company's U.S. productions when his father became an independent producer and moved his operations in Paris. When his father again took over the helm at Fox, young Zanuck was made vice president in charge of all productions. He gained complete control in 1969, but during a heated proxy battle was forcibly removed from the presidency. Between 1971 and 1972, he served as the company's senior executive vice president but subsequently quit to co-found a company with David Brown. Among the Zanuck-Brown company's top-grossing films are The Sting (1973), Jaws (1975), Cocoon (1985), Driving Miss Daisy (1989), and Deep Impact (1998). Together, Zanuck and Brown have earned a number of accolades over their long careers, including the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Irving G. Thalberg Award in 1991, and the David O. Selznick Lifetime Achievement Award from the Producers Guild of America in 1995. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Richard Darryl Zanuck (born December 13, 1934) is an American film producer.

Born in Los Angeles, California, he was the son of Darryl Zanuck, the famed head of Twentieth-Century Fox studios. While studying at Stanford University, Richard began his career in the film industry working for the Twentieth-Century Fox story department. In 1959, Zanuck got his first shot at producing when his father installed him as the producer of the film Compulsion. In the 1960's Zanuck became the president of his father's studio; one year of his tenure, 1967, is chronicled in the John Gregory Dunne novel "The Studio". Richard was later fired by his father and joined Warner Brothers, although Zanuck was eventually fired from there too.

In 1972, Zanuck joined up with David Brown to form an independent production company called Zanuck/Brown Productions. With help from Universal Pictures, the pair produced two of Steven Spielberg's early films, The Sugarland Express (1974) and Jaws (1975). They went on to produce such box office hits as Cocoon (1985) and Driving Miss Daisy (1989) before dissolving their partnership in 1988. Nevertheless, they were jointly awarded The Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1990.

In 2000, Zanuck and his third wife Lili Fini Zanuck co-produced the 72nd Academy Awards ceremony.[1]
