Richard Gridley
Gridley, Richard (1711-96) military engineer, born in Boston, Massachusetts. Gridley served as chief engineer and commander of the artillery in the Continental army during the Revolutionary War. He built a number of fortifications in the area of Boston harbor, one of which was the cause of the British withdrawal by sea in March 1776. He also supervised the digging of entrenchments before the Battle of Bunker Hill (1775).
