(geology) A low, traverse ridge of bedrock on the floor of a glacial valley. Also known as rock bar; threshold; verrou.
An outcrop of rock forming a bar across a glacial trough. Riegels usually develop when outcrops of resistant rock cross the trough, and are often separated by flattish areas, so that they often act as a dam to impound the waters of a lake. See paternoster lake. As a result of abrasion, the upstream sides are striated and rounded, while plucking makes the downstream side rough and jagged. See roche moutonnée.
