from Flemish
This word originated in Belgium

Without the assistance of Flemish, the English language would be impoverished. We would not be able to rip a seam, rip open an envelope, rip apart the opposition. Romance novelists wouldn't be able to rip bodices. And nobody could rip off someone else's property.

Rip is a word so much at home in English that it needs no introduction. English obtained it in the late Middle Ages, around 1477. We didn't have to go far to get it; rip was in the vocabulary not only of Flemish but of Frisian, Dutch, and Low German. All four are Germanic languages located just across the Channel from England. They are closely related to each other and to English.

Flemish is, in fact, a variety of the Dutch language. It is spoken in Flanders, a region that includes parts of northern France and the northern half of Belgium. We count it as a separate language from Dutch because it is in a different country; it has been said that a language is a dialect with an army and a navy of its own. Nowadays standard Flemish and standard Dutch are the same, but in earlier times Flemish was a distinct dialect.

The historical importance of Flanders in trade with England has brought several dozen Flemish words into the English language. These include cambric (1530), dock (in court, 1586), funk (1743), and in this century waterzooi (a thick creamy stew, 1949).

1. To extract the digital representation of a piece of music from an audio CD. Software that does this is often called a “CD ripper”.

2. [Amiga hackers] To extract sound or graphics from a program that they have been compiled/assembled into, or which generates them at run-time. In the case of older Amiga games this entails searching through memory shortly after a reboot. This sense has been in use for many years and probably gave rise to the (now more common) sense 1.

n. 1. a stretch of fast-flowing and rough water in the sea or in a river, caused by the meeting of currents.

  1. repeat-induced point (mutation); a phenomenon found in Neurospora; when more than one copy of a DNA sequence is present in a haploid genome that goes through a cross, both ectopic and endogenous copies are subject to point mutation at a high rate. RIP occurs in the dikaryotic ascogenous hyphae. Because transformation of Neurospora typically leads to gene amplification, RIP provides a highly efficient and selective method of introducing mutations in vivo in any gene cloned in vitro.
