Artist: Rita Moreno
Rita Moreno

Biography

A Broadway singer and actress, Rita Moreno was frequently cast in the Latin girl roles, striving to become an important actress like her actress-idol, Lana Turner. Although she had a number of obstacles to overcome being from Puerto Rico, she became a star in Hollywood, on Broadway, in films and television.

Born Rosa Dolores Alverio in Puerto Rico, Rita Moreno was born into a poor family. Her mother fled to the United States looking for work after the United States declared war on Cuba and took over Puerto Rico. Rita Moreno joined her mother in New York and never saw her father or younger brother again. Her time in New York as a young child was rough on Rita Moreno. At first she was unable to speak English and found it very difficult to get along with the other children. She became shy and reserved. Despite her shyness, Rita Moreno was ready to perform the Mexican hat dance at every assembly or talent show. Rita Moreno's mother enrolled her in dance classes where she met her mentor Paco Cansino. She was seven when she performed her first dance recital.

Rita Moreno made her professional debut on Broadway at the age of 13. She played Angelina in Skydrift. She performed in nightclubs during her teen years dubbing herself as the "Latin Spitfire." At the age of 19 she made her first Hollywood film, So Young So Bad. After being cast in many ethnic Latin roles, including an Indian maiden in Jivaro, Rita Moreno's hopes of being a Hollywood star were deflated.

In 1955 Rita Moreno decided to leave MGM and singed a contract with Fox in hopes that the roles would be different. Her first film, Untamed, saw her playing a hot-blooded, hot-tempered Latin sex kitten. The next role in Seven Cities of Gold, she was cast as a poor barefoot Native American woman. Things began to change for Rita Moreno when she was cast as Tuptim, the Asian princess in The King and I. In 1957 Fox lapsed Rita Moreno's contract and discouraged her from acting.

Finally in 1961 Rita Moreno returned to the stage. She played Anita in West Side Story. She won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in the film one year later. Under the direction of Hal Prince she went to London and performed in She Loves Me. Because of discrimination of Rita Moreno, she and Hal Prince left London for New York where she played in The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window.

Her personal and professional life took a turn for the better in the 60s. She married Lenny Gordon in 1965, a doctor who eventually became Rita Moreno's manager. The two had one daughter. She received the Joseph Jefferson Award in 1968 for her role in The Rose Tattoo. During the 70s she was being cast in all sorts of roles instead of just stereotypical roles. She starred in Carnal Knowledge, The Last of the Red Hot Lovers, The Ritz and Anatomy of Seduction. Although her film career had changed dramatically she found she enjoyed television also. In 1971 she was given a part on the children's show The Electric Company. This was one of her most rewarding parts as she felt she was giving back to the community. In 1972 she won a Grammy for the soundtrack The Electric Company. Her television career boomed as she won a Tony Award for The Ritz, an Emmy for her performance on The Muppets and an Emmy again for The Rockford Files. One of Rita Moreno's greatest accomplishments is being listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as being the only actress to win all four entertainment awards.

Despite many obstacles, Rita Moreno made herself into an astounding singer and actress. She performs an act in nightclubs and constantly contributes to the arts and Hispanic communities. With more than 25 films and 10 Broadway shows, Rita Moreno has overcome any obstacles that stood in her way. ~ Kim Summers, All Music Guide

Biography

Energetic dancer, singer, and actress Rita Moreno was born Rosa Dolores Alverio in Puerto Rico to a family of independent farmers. She moved to New York City with her mother at age five and went on to become one of the few people to win an Oscar, a Tony, an Emmy, and a Grammy throughout her long career. At age 13, she took her vibrant stage presence and star quality to Broadway, and by the next year she had made it to Hollywood, where MGM studio executives suggested she change her name to Rita.

Mostly appearing in musicals, her most notable roles of the '50s include Zelda Zanders the Zip Girl in Singin' in the Rain and Tuptim in The King and I. During this close-minded time period in American cinema, she was showcased for her "exotic" qualities in films like Pagan Love Song, Latin Lovers, and The Fabulous Señorita. She also starred in the costume drama The Vagabond King as well as various adventures and Westerns, usually providing the musical entertainment. Her big breakthrough came in 1961 with her role as the spitfire Anita in West Side Story, winning her an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress. During the '60s, she took her talents back to the stage and got married, but she did appear in the films Carnal Knowledge with Jack Nicholson and Popi with Alan Arkin. As a mother during the '70s, she turned to television and got involved with the PBS children's series The Electric Company, which led to a Grammy award for her recording contribution to the soundtrack album. She also won Emmy awards for her work on The Rockford Files and The Muppet Show. Meanwhile, she reprised her Tony-winning Broadway role of entertainer Googie Gomez for the 1976 film version of The Ritz. In the '80s, she appeared in the TV sitcom 9 to 5, the detective series B.L. Stryker, and several made-for-TV movies. In the '90s, she provided the voice for the title character in the PBS educational program Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego? She started making features again, taking supporting roles in independent comedy dramas, including Slums of Beverly Hills. In 1997, she turned to confrontational drama as Sister Peter Marie Reimondo on the HBO prison drama Oz. Since 2000, she has been a leading advocate of osteoporosis awareness and has appeared in the John Sayles ensemble feature Casa de los Babys in 2003.

In 2007, Moreno appeared in a cameo role on the hit series Ugly Betty, playing the title character's aunt. Later that same year, she joined the cast of the drama series Cane, a show about a Latin family and their trials and tribulations running a family owned business. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, All Movie Guide

Rita Moreno (born December 11, 1931) is a Puerto Rican singer, dancer and actress. She is the first and only Hispanic female and one of ten performers who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony and at the time the second Puerto Rican to win an Academy Award.[1]

Early years

Moreno was born Rosita Dolores Alverío in Humacao, Puerto Rico, to Rosa María, a seamstress, and Paco Alverío, a farmer.[2] She moved with her mother to New York City at the age of five, and took the surname of her stepfather, Edward Moreno.[2] When she was eleven years old, she lent her voice to Spanish-language versions of American films.

She had her first Broadway role—as "Angelina" in Skydrift --by the time she was 13, which caught the attention of Hollywood talent scouts. She played a small role in the 1952 movie Singin' in the Rain as Zelda Zanners, a fictional silent screen vamp, and had a supporting role in the 1956 musical The King and I as Tuptim, but disliked most of her other work during this period.[3]

West Side Story

In 1961, Moreno landed the role of Anita in Robert Wise's film adaptation of Leonard Bernstein's and Stephen Sondheim's groundbreaking Broadway musical, West Side Story, which was played by Chita Rivera on Broadway. Moreno won the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for that role.[4] Moreno went on to be the first actress (and the first Hispanic) to win an Emmy (1977), a Grammy(1972), an Oscar (1962) and a Tony (1975). In 1985, she won the Sarah Siddons Award for her work in Chicago.[4]

Other Roles

Besides appearing in Singin' in the Rain, The King and I, Summer and Smoke (1961), West Side Story, The Night of the Following Day (1968) and Carnal Knowledge in (1971), Moreno appeared on the PBS children's series The Electric Company in the 1970s, most notably as Millie the Helper. In fact, it was Moreno who screamed the show's opening line, "HEY, YOU GUYS!" She also had roles as the naughty little girl Pandora, and as "Otto", the very short-tempered director. Moreno appeared in the family variety series The Muppet Show, and she made other guest appearances on television series such as The Rockford Files, The Love Boat, The Cosby Show, George Lopez, The Golden Girls, and Miami Vice. She was also a regular on the short-lived sitcom version of Nine to Five (based on the film hit) during the early 1980s.[3]

Broadway and television

Moreno's Broadway credits include The Last of the Red Hot Lovers, Gantry, The Ritz, for which she won the 1975 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress, and the female version of The Odd Couple.[3] In 1993 she was invited to perform at President Bill Clinton's inauguration and later that month was asked to perform at the White House.[1] During the mid 1990s, Moreno provided the voice of Carmen Sandiego on the animated Fox show Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?

In the late 1990s, she gained exposure to a new generation of viewers when she played Sister Pete, a nun trained as a psychologist in the popular HBO series, Oz. She made a guest appearance on The Nanny as Coach Stone, Maggie's (Nicholle Tom) tyrannical gym teacher, whom Fran Fine (Fran Drescher) also remembered from her school as Ms. Wickavich.[5]

Performing in the 21st century

Moreno continues to be active on stage and screen. In 2006, she portrayed Amanda Wingfield in Berkeley Repertory Theatre's revival of The Glass Menagerie. She was seen on Law and Order: Criminal Intent as the dying mother of Detective Goren. She was a regular on the short-lived TV series Cane, which starred Jimmy Smits and Hector Elizondo.[6]

Family

On June 18, 1965, Moreno married Leonard Gordon, who remains her husband and manager. They have one daughter, Fernanda Luisa (Gordon) Fisher,[4] and 2 grandsons.
