Biography

Soft spoken and clever, Rita Rudner could hardly be called offensive. Her humor is in fact, very, very palatable. Most of her comedy revolves the "square" persona she has developed for the stage. She's offbeat and intelligent and focuses the minutia of every day life and love. She manages to be clean -- without being boring. Because of this, Ms. Rudner has a very mainstream appeal; she is a staple of American comedy. Rita Rudner made Friars Club history by being the first woman comic ever invited to be a "roaster" (roastee: Chevy Chase). She was a regular on The Johnny Carson Show and performed at The George Burns 95th Birthday Special and The Bob Hope Christmas Special. Ms. Rudner also made an appearance in the first Women of the Night comedy special where she was one of four honored comediennes. She has been on Comic Relief and had her own HBO One Night Stand entitled Born to Be Mild. In 1990, she won the American Comedy Award for Best Female Stand-up. She has had an international career and in England, premiered her own comedy series for the BBC. Ms. Rudner has a history of sold-out shows all over the USA, England, Australia, and even in such far away exotic places as Las Vegas. In 1993, Ms. Rudner got a nomination for Best Comedy Album with her book-on-tape, Naked Beneath My Clothes. She has authored another book entitled Rita Rudner's Guide to Men. She has also had the distinct honor of having been a cartoon client of Dr. Katz.

Ms. Rudner began her performing career after leaving Miami at the tender age of 15 to dance on Broadway. After hanging up her dancing shoes and taking up comedy as a career in the '80s, she moved from New York to Los Angeles and consequently had to learn to drive. This mutli-talented woman is now married to English comedy producer Martin Bergmann, with whom she writes screenplays. Together they wrote Peter's Friends and A Weekend in the Country, both of which were directed by Kenneth Branagh. ~ Sandy Lawson, All Music Guide

Biography

A favorite of the talk show circuit and a rarity in the age of brassy, outspoken female comics, Rita Rudner has a soft-spoken, low-key style that fronts for an incisive wit unmatched by the majority of her contemporaries. A Miami native who had starry-eyed, childhood dreams of dancing under the bright lights of Broadway, Rudner left home at the age of 15 and bypassed college to seek fame on the stage. Initial exposure in a traveling production of Zorba preceded Broadway roles in Annie and Promises, Promises, and a bid to go solo a few years later sparked an interest in standup comedy. Though the prospect of "dying" on-stage (popular comedian-speak for bombing in front of an audience) frightened Rudner at first, she eventually gathered her nerves and became quite popular; in the years that followed, she gained nationwide exposure on the Johnny Carson and David Letterman shows. Her wry brand of observant and insightful comedy was inspired by the early work of Woody Allen, and in 1990 she received an award for Best Female Standup Comedian. Her unique comic persona also gained a notable following in the U.K., where in 1990 Rudner headlined a short-lived BBC series. While in Britain, Rudner also found love with former BBC comedy writer Martin Bergmann, who became her frequent writing partner. In addition to penning the screenplay for Kenneth Branagh's film Peter's Friends, the two also collaborated in the Bergmann-directed comedy A Weekend in the Country (1996). Though she made history by becoming the first female comic to be invited to a Friar's Club "roast," her frustration with the lack of roles for smart women was often evident in interviews. In 2003, Rudner took a stab at U.S. television with Ask Rita, a daily talk/advice program. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Early life

Rudner was born in Miami, Florida, the daughter of Frances, a homemaker, and Abe Rudner, a lawyer.[1] Her mother died when she was 13. After graduating from high school at 15, Rudner left Miami and headed to New York City to embark on a career as a dancer.[2] She appeared in several Broadway shows, including the now-legendary original productions of Follies and Mack & Mabel.

Rudner did not turn to comedy until she was 25, after observing how few female comedians there were compared to the number of female dancers. She spent many hours researching her favorite comedians, including Woody Allen and Jack Benny. She enjoys Jewish humor, but reserves her Jewish jokes for Jewish audiences.[2]

Career

Rudner has appeared in several television shows both in the U.S. and the UK, and she appeared often on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. She has recorded several award-winning comedy specials, most notably Rita Rudner: Born to Be Mild and Rita Rudner: Married Without Children for HBO and Rita Rudner: Live From Las Vegas for PBS in 2008 (now available on DVD).

Rudner and her producer husband, Martin Bergman, wrote the screenplay of the film Peter's Friends, in which she also acted. She is the author of the best-selling I Still Have It; I Just Can't Remember Where I Put It, Naked Beneath My Clothes, and the novels Tickled Pink and Turning The Tables. She has written several screenplays with her husband and a play called "Room 776" which premiered in Las Vegas in 2008.

Since 2001, Rudner has performed almost exclusively in Las Vegas, selling over one million tickets. She moved to a larger theatre at Harrah's in 2006 and is currently contracted to appear there through January 2012. She also recently created and hosted the syndicated improvisational comedy show Ask Rita, which mimicked the format of a talk/advice show. For this she received a Gracie Allen Award from the American Women in Television and Radio. In May 2009 she performed for Senator Harry Reid and President Obama at Caesars Palace alongside Bette Midler and Sheryl Crow; a video of some of this performance can be found on Rita's Facebook page or YouTube.

She and her husband Martin Bergman adopted a daughter, Molly, in 2002. They have homes in Las Vegas and Southern California.
