Robert Grant Aitken

Scientist: Robert Grant Aitken

American astronomer (1864–1951)

Born in Jackson, California, Aitken obtained his AB in 1887 and his AM in 1892 from Williams College, Massachusetts. He began his career at the University of the Pacific, then in San Jose, as professor of mathematics from 1891 until 1895 when he joined the staff of Lick Observatory, Mount Hamilton, California. He remained at Lick for his entire career, serving as its director from 1930 until his retirement in 1935.

Aitken did much to advance knowledge of binary stars, i.e. pairs of stars orbiting about the same point under their mutual gravitational attraction. He described over 3000 binary systems and published in 1932 the comprehensive work New General Catalogue of Double Stars Within 120° of the North Pole. He also produced the standard work The Binary Stars (1918).

Robert Grant Aitken (December 31, 1864 – October 29, 1951) was an American astronomer.[1]

He worked at Lick Observatory in California.[1] He systematically studied double stars, measuring their positions and calculating their orbits around one another. He methodically created a very large catalog of such stars, which was published in 1932 and entitled New General Catalogue of Double Stars Within 120o of the North Pole,[1] with the orbit information enabling astronomers to calculate stellar mass statistics for a large number of stars.

Aitken also measured positions and computed orbits for comets and natural satellites of planets.

Aitken was partly deaf and used a hearing aid. He married Jessie Thomas around 1888, and had three sons and one daughter. His grandson, Robert Baker Aitken, is a widely-known Zen Buddhist teacher and author.
