1940Portrait of Jennie. Nathan spins a characteristic gentle fantasy about a struggling young artist inspired by a young girl. It would be made into a film by David O. Selznick in 1948. Nathan was a New York City-born poet and novelist. His other books include The Puppet Master (1923), The Fiddler in Barley (1926), and The Bishop's Wife (1928).
1941They Went On Together. The novel, in a shift from Nathan's characteristic gentle fantasy to realism, concerns wartime evacuees seen through the eyes of two homeless children.
