An adjective applied to a statistic or a statistical procedure which implies that the value of the statistic or the outcome of the procedure will be relatively unaffected by the presence of a small number of unusual or incorrect data values. Thus the median is a robust measure of location and the interquartile range is a robust measure of spread.
Refers to software without bugs that handles abnormal conditions well. It is often said that there is no software package totally bug free. Any program can exhibit odd behavior under certain conditions, but a robust program will not lock up the computer, cause damage to data or send the user through an endless chain of dialog boxes without purpose. Whether or not a program can be totally bug free will be debated forever. See industrial strength.

In economics, robustness is attributed to financial markets that continue to perform despite alterations in market conditions. In general, being robust means a system can handle variability and remain effective.
