has its stress on the second syllable, although first-syllable stress is creeping in, on the analogy of shifts in dispute, romance, and other words. There is a curious meaning given in the COD: 'not perturbed by or attending to subtleties', which is effectively a blend of the more general historical senses 'crude' and 'vigorous'. The following seem to be examples of this:
Chief constables are being urged to...encourage officers to be more 'robust' in using their powers to take DNA samples—Scotland on Sunday, 2002
Later I am meeting with [the] Chief Executive...for what may well become a 'robust' exchange of views—weblog, British English 2005.
Alternatives are rigorous, assertive, forthright, pragmatic, down-to-earth, and tough-minded, although robust might be regarded as combining meanings from several of these.

Previous:rob, roast, roasted, road, street

Refers to software without bugs that handles abnormal conditions well. It is often said that there is no software package totally bug free. Any program can exhibit odd behavior under certain conditions, but a robust program will not lock up the computer, cause damage to data or send the user through an endless chain of dialog boxes without purpose. Whether or not a program can be totally bug free will be debated forever. See industrial strength.

Investopedia Says:
Robustness can relate to both economic and statistical concepts. For statistics, a test is claimed as robust if it still provides insight to a problem despite having its assumptions altered or violated. In economics, robustness is attributed to financial markets that continue to perform despite alterations in market conditions. In general, being robust means a system can handle variability and remain effective.
