    3. An often expandable horizontal bar, especially of metal, used to suspend household items such as curtains or towels.

    5. A lightning rod.
    6. A divining rod.
    7. A measuring stick.
  2. A shoot or stem cut from or growing as part of a woody plant.
    1. A stick or bundle of sticks or switches used to give punishment by whipping.
    2. Punishment; correction.
  3. A scepter, staff, or wand symbolizing power or authority.
  4. Power or dominion, especially of a tyrannical nature: "under the rod of a cruel slavery" (John Henry Newman).

    1. A linear measure equal to 5.5 yards or 16.5 feet (5.03 meters). Also called pole.
    2. The square of this measure, equal to 30.25 square yards or 272.25 square feet (25.30 square meters).
  6. Bible. A line of family descent; a branch of a tribe.
  7. Anatomy. Any of various rod-shaped cells in the retina that respond to dim light.
  8. Microbiology. An elongated bacterium; a bacillus.
  9. Slang. A pistol or revolver.
  10. A portion of the undercarriage of a train, especially the drawbar under a freight car. Often used in the plural: ride the rods.

Term applied to a type of Mesolithic microlith found especially in northwestern Europe. Rods are rounded forms of microliths retouched along the edges.

A straight, slim mass of substance; specifically, one of the retinal rods; are highly specialized cylindrical segments of the neuroepithelial visual cells containing rhodopsin and modified to receive, transduce and transmit visual stimuli; together with the retinal cones, they form the light-sensitive elements of the retina. See also cone (1).

  • r.–cone dysplasia — an inherited defect in dogs, particularly Irish setters, Elkhounds and Miniature poodles, causing a progressive retinal atrophy with impairment of night vision, then day vision starting at an early age. There are differences in the ultrastructural and biochemical features in each breed, but generally rods are more severely affected than cones. See also progressive retinal atrophy.
  • olfactory r. — the slender apical portion of an olfactory bipolar neuron, a modified dendrite extending to the surface of the epithelium.
