a rod-shaped light-sensitive cell of the vertebrate retina. Rod cells contain rhodopsin or (in freshwater and migratory fish and some amphibians) porphyropsin, and are responsible for vision in dim light. They occupy all of the margin of the retina and are absent from the fovea. Each is a highly specialized cell with an outer and inner segment, a cell body, and a synaptic region where the rod passes a chemical signal to retinal nerve cells. Phototransduction occurs in the outer segment, which contains a stack of rhodopsin-rich membrane disks. The plasma membrane of the outer segment contains cyclic-GMP-gated Na⁺ channels. These are kept open in the dark by cyclic GMP molecules bound to the channels. Metarhodopsin II, i.e. rhodopsin activated by a photon, activates transducin, a G-protein, which then activates a cyclic GMP phosphodiesterase, reducing the cellular level of cyclic GMP to initiate a nerve impulse in the optic nerve. A straight, slim mass of substance; specifically, one of the retinal rods; are highly specialized cylindrical segments of the neuroepithelial visual cells containing rhodopsin and modified to receive, transduce and transmit visual stimuli; together with the retinal cones, they form the light-sensitive elements of the retina.
