(rôdĕz') , city (1993 pop. 26,794), capital of Aveyron dept., S France. It is a farm trade center; gloves and plastics are made. An episcopal see since the 4th cent., it was the historic capital of Rouergue. An impressive northern Gothic cathedral (13th–16th cent.) is there.

Rodez (Occitan: Rodés) is a city and commune in southern France, in the Aveyron département. Its inhabitants are called les Ruthenois.

History

Rodez was the historic capital of Rouergue.

Sights

Rodez has been an episcopal city since the 4th century, featuring an impressive  metre ( ft)-tall cathedral. One of its features is a completely closed western wall, which was part of the city's defence wall.

Economy

Rodez is traditionally an agricultural trade center.

Transportation

Rodez is served by the nearby Rodez Marcillac Airport, located on the territory of the commune of Salles-la-Source.

  • Bernard Laporte was born in Rodez.
  • Around 10 tourists a year make the mistake of travelling to Rodez when they intend to travel to Rhodes [1].
