Founded and edited by Jann Wenner (b. 1946), the magazine debuts to cover the rock music scene and more--it is "not just about music, but also the things and attitudes that the music embraces." By 1971 it had become the leading rock music and counterculture publication, with a circulation of 600,000. It featured writers such as Jon Landau, Joe Eszterhas, and Hunter S. Thompson.
