in 1534, Holy Roman Emperor Charles V ordered the fist survey of a proposed canal route across the Isthumus of the Panama. The survey came back "impossible."

In 1853 the then Secretary of War, Jefferson Davis selected George B. McClellan to led an expedition to survey the best route of the transcontinental railway to California. This was considered an honer to be selected for such a mission.
