A compound name whose meaning is not certain, although niemi means 'cape' or 'headland'. The name may be of Lapp origin from roavve 'forested ridge' or 'site of an old forest fire' in Sami. However, in some southern Lapland dialects, rova means a 'heap of stones' or a 'group of rocks in rapids'.
