Rudolf Flesch

1955Why Johnny Can't Read. Flesch's controversial bestseller critiques the inadequacy of American education to improve literacy among the young. The sequels Teaching Johnny to Read (1956) and Why Johnny Still Can't Read (1981) would follow. Born in Vienna, Flesch immigrated to the United States in 1938; he was a literacy and writing expert who advocated a phonetic approach to teaching reading.
