Ruscus hypoglossum is a shrub also known as Butcher's Broom. It
is hardy between zones 7b and 11. So no, it won't survive the
winter (outdoors) in zone 5. However, its ability to grow in full
shade would likely allow it to be grown as a houseplant, though it
gets pretty big. I'm sure you could control its size with pruning,
if you wanted to. Keep in mind, some parts of this plant are
poisonous if swallowed. So you probably don't want to have it
around kids or pets.
