Ryan Reynolds is the tall, genial star of TV and films who got his first big break as National Lampoon's Van Wilder (2002). Biography

Handsome comic actor Ryan Reynolds may be best known to television viewers for his role in the popular Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place, though if it weren't for his close friend Chris Martin, Reynolds' star may have not risen quite as smoothly as it did. Born in 1976, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, to a food wholesaler father and a retail store saleswoman, Reynolds harbored an affection for acting from his early youth, and was undeterred after failing a drama class at the age of twelve. Making his television debut two years later on the Nickelodeon show Fifteen, the aspiring youngster crossed the border and relocated to Florida for the taping of the show, moving back to Vancouver soon after production ceased in 1991. Turning up in numerous television series such as Sabrina the Teenage Witch and made-for-TV movies in the following years, Reynolds soon grew despondent that his career was not moving along as smoothly as he wished. Recognizing his friend's frustrations, fellow actor Martin suggested that the two pick up and head for the Hollywood hills. Crashing in a cheap hotel and having his jeep stripped and rolled down a hill did little to raise Reynolds' spirits, though the determined actor carried on, landing his role on Two Guys in 1997. The only actor to read for the role of Berg, Reynolds won the favor of the producers and was soon on his way to success in the States. Following with roles in the teen horror comedy Boltneck (1998) and later Dick (1999) and Finder's Fee (2000), Reynolds soon began assuming his position among the hot young actors of the early millennium, taking the lead in 2001 for Van Wilder.

Prominent roles in more high-profile films followed, including the part of Hannibal King in 2004's Blade Trinity, and the lead role of George Lutz in the 2005 remake of the classic horror movie The Amityville Horror. He soon followed this up with starring roles in two comedies: 2005's Waiting and Just Friends. With his career on a meteoric path upward, he continued to branch, snagging starring roles in films like the supernatural thriller The Nines, and the romantic comedy Definitely Maybe, eventually signing on to play the character of Deadpool in the next installment in the X-Men franchise X-Men Origins: Wolverine, as well as agreeing to star alongside Sandra Bullock in the romantic comedy The Proposal. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Early life

Reynolds was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, to James (a retired Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman who later became a food wholesaler) and Tammy Reynolds (a retail salesperson).[1] The youngest of four brothers,[2] Reynolds graduated from Kitsilano Secondary School, located in Vancouver, in 1994. He then attended Kwantlen College in Vancouver until dropping out. [3]

Reynolds held several jobs at places such as yacht clubs, nightclubs, and grocery stores, and created an improv comedy group in Vancouver called Yellow Snow when he was a child.[1]

Career

Reynolds in 2007

Reynolds's career began in 1990 when he starred as Billy in the Canadian-produced teen soap Hillside, distributed in the United States by Nickelodeon as Fifteen. As an adult, Reynolds starred in the National Lampoon movie Van Wilder and the American television series Two Guys, A Girl and a Pizza Place, playing medical student Michael "Berg" Bergen. He also cameoed in Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle as a nurse, appeared in The In-Laws with Michael Douglas and Albert Brooks, as well as the Canadian production Foolproof. In 2005 he played a waiter named Monty in Waiting..., and as music executive Chris Brander in the romantic comedy Just Friends alongside Amy Smart and Anna Faris. Ryan played the protagonist of the 2008 film Definitely, Maybe. He has also appeared in the second season finale of the television series Scrubs, where he played Spence, a college friend of J.D. and Turk. In 2007, Reynolds guest-starred as Brendan's friend Hams in the episode "Douchebag in the City" of the TBS sitcom My Boys. In 2009, he portrayed the character of Andrew Paxton, starring opposite Sandra Bullock in the highly successful romantic comedy The Proposal.

Although he has performed primarily in comedies, Reynolds played the dark character George Lutz in the remake of the horror movie The Amityville Horror. Reynolds underwent intense physical training to play an action role as the character of Hannibal King in the film Blade: Trinity, which also starred Wesley Snipes and Jessica Biel. He has also played as an FBI agent alongside Ray Liotta in the crime action movie Smokin' Aces.

In a March 2005 interview, Reynolds spoke of his interest and involvement in a possible film adaptation of Deadpool with screenwriter David S. Goyer[4] and also the possibility of playing the incarnation of The Flash known as Wally West in an adaption of the popular DC Comics character in the upcoming movie project. Reynolds portrayed Deadpool in the X-Men spinoff X-Men Origins: Wolverine and will portray him again in a recently announced spin-off called Deadpool.[5]

Reynolds will portray superhero Hal Jordan (Green Lantern) in Warner Brothers' upcoming film Green Lantern.[6]

Personal life

In 2002, Reynolds began dating Canadian singer Alanis Morissette. They announced their engagement in June 2004.[7] In February 2007, representatives for Morissette and Reynolds announced that they had mutually decided to end their engagement.[8]

Soon after the end of his relationship with Morissette, Reynolds began dating actress Scarlett Johansson[9] and the couple announced their engagement on May 5, 2008.[10] They married on September 27, 2008, in a ceremony near Tofino, British Columbia.[11]

In October 2008, Reynolds wrote for The Huffington Post regarding his plan to run the New York City Marathon for his father, who suffers from Parkinson's Disease.[12]
