The most powerful rocket to date is the Soviet Energia designed to carry the Buran Space Shuttle and in theory go the the moon.

Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space on April 12, 1961. He was selected for the mission by Sergi Korolev, the head of the Soviet Union's space program. Korolev was also the chief designer of the rocket and capsule that sent Gagarin into space.

The Energia rocket was a Soviet rocket to serve as a booster for the Buran spacecraft. It was launched only twice with one such launch being deemed a failure when it failed to deliver its payload into orbit.
