Sarah Baartman was treated like an animal and not human by the
showmen who brought her to Europe to showcase as a freak show
attraction. The racism continued after her death as her body was
subjected to a dissection, the results of which claimed that she
bore more similarities to an ape than a human. Until 1974, her
preserved skeleton, brain, and genitals were on display at the
Musee de lÕHomme. It wasnÕt until 2002 that her remains were sent
back to her home country of South Africa and buried.
