Biography

A British actress who is probably best known to American audiences for her turn as a lusty society girl-turned-vampire in Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula and her former real-life role as the wife of Jude Law, Sadie Frost has resisted the pull of Hollywood in favor of a career in small British films. A number of these films have been the product of Natural Nylon, a production company that Frost founded with then-husband Law and actors Jonny Lee Miller, Ewan McGregor, and Sean Pertwee.

Born into a large bohemian family in London in 1967, Frost had her acting debut at the age of three in a Jelly Tots commercial. She studied acting at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts when she was 11, and then ran away to Liverpool to become a punk. At the age of 19, Frost joined the Manchester Exchange Theatre, and that same year married Spandau Ballet frontman-cum-actor Gary Kemp, with whom she later co-starred in The Krays (1990) and the Polish arthouse film Papierowe Malzenstwo (1992). The marriage, which ended in 1997, produced one son.

Frost got her biggest break when she was cast in Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992); although the film received very mixed reviews, many critics praised the actress' work as Winona Ryder's blood-sucking best friend. Frost resisted the lure of Hollywood, however, preferring to remain in her native country. In 1994, she starred in Shopping, a nihilistic urban drama that cast her as an Irish punk who, in the company of her boyfriend, enjoys adrenaline-fueled crime sprees. The film provided Frost with an introduction to Jude Law, who played her boyfriend. The two married in 1997 and had three children (two sons and a daughter) before they divorced in 2003.

Frost subsequently appeared largely in such art films as Rancid Aluminum (2000), in which she starred with Rhys Ifans, Tara Fitzgerald, and Joseph Fiennes. She also took part in such Natural Nylon productions as The Final Cut (1998), a drama about people doing nasty things, and Love, Honour and Obey (1999), a drama about a group of East London gangsters. In addition to her film work, Frost co-owns the fashion label Frost French with her close friend Jemima French. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide

Biography

Born Sadie Liza Vaughan, her parents were psychedelic artist David Vaughan, who did work for The Beatles, and his then-16-year-old muse, actress Mary Davidson.[1][2]

Her childhood she describes as "chaotic but positive experience,"[1] being born in Primrose Hill, but spending much of her youth in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester after her parents separated. Her parents had six relationships between them, and although Sadie is the oldest they produced four sisters and five brothers for her: including fellow actresses Holly Davidson and Jade Davidson; a brother called Gabriel Jupiter and a sister named Sunshine Purple Tara Velvet.[3] According to Frost, one of her stepfathers was a follower of the Bhagwan cult, who forbade the children to say the words “No” or “Sorry”, and during her father's colour-therapy phase, he insisted that everybody in the house wear orange, and wouldn’t let them eat anything that was red. They also had to take showers wearing tracksuits and were made to refer to objects as the most opposite they could think of as a test of character, for example calling apples elephants.[1]

Her nickname is "Little Liza".

Career

After appearing in a Jelly Tots advertisement, aged three, and appearing with Morecambe and Wise, aged five, she gained a scholarship to the Italia Conti Academy.[3] However, following an early eating disorder,[4] she gave up acting at age thirteen and attended Hampstead School[5]. On graduation she left home to escape her parents, and at age nineteen she appeared in a play called Mumbo Jumbo at the Manchester Royal Exchange Theatre.

As an actress, the majority of her acting credits have been brief supporting roles, including parts in Press Gang and Casualty.[6] Her first film role was in Diamond Skulls, though her most memorable film appearance is as vampire Lucy Westenra in Bram Stoker's Dracula in 1992. She earned her living mainly through appearing in music videos, including for Pulp's song "Common People", Planet Perfecto featuring Grace "Not Over Yet '99"; and various productions for Spandau Ballet where she met first husband Gary Kemp.

Frost and Kemp appeared together in the 1990's film The Krays. The couple went on to appear in two movies together, one of which was filmed while they were separated: the 1994's film Magic Hunter, even required the two to participate in a love scene.

She took a role opposite Jude Law in Paul W. S. Anderson's directorial debut Shopping. After marrying and having three further children, she cut down on her acting commitments in the late 1990s, and moved into producing and co-founding the production company Natural Nylon.

In 1999, she co-founded the fashion label Frost French with her friend, Jemima French. The label started in lingerie and has expanded into clothing collections. The company and her turbulent private life means she has an agent at Storm Model Agency,[7] and appears irregularly on the cover of magazines such Glamour.[8]

In 2004, she wrote, presented and produced a short lived series What Sadie did next... for E4, and in 2005 appeared in Eating with...Sadie Frost on BBC2.

Frost has a number of charity commitments. In March 2006, Frost flew to South Africa to part-fund an orphanage for the Homes of Hope project.

In September 2006, she posed nude for Canadian photographer Bryan Adams for a PETA anti-fur ad to coincide with London Fashion Week.[9]

In 2009, she makes her West End debut in Touched ... For the Very First Time, a new one-woman show by Zoe Lewis, directed by Douglas Rintoul and produced by Imogen Lloyd Webber.

Personal life

Whilst aged 16 and dancing in a music video, she met Spandau Ballet's Gary Kemp. They married on 7 May 1988, and later had a son, Finlay Munro (born 20 September 1990). Gary Kemp and Sadie Frost were married for five years and separated for two. They divorced on 19 August 1995.[10]

She met Jude Law during the work on the film Shopping. They married on 2 September 1997 and they have three children: son Rafferty (born 6 October 1996), daughter Iris (born 25 October 2000) and son Rudy Indiana Otis (born 10 September 2002). Frost and Law divorced on 29 October 2003.[11] After a two year negotiation, in 2005 the couple reached a divorce settlement, with Frost keeping the couple's £2million house in Primrose Hill, and receiving a £4million payment and £15,000 a month.

She supports Breast Cancer Care[12]

Primrose Hill set

Frost is close to British model Kate Moss, being both godmother to Moss's daughter and involved in the same charity work. Their relationship, together with former Hollyoaks actress Davinia Taylor was referred to in the tabloids as an extension of the 1990s "Primrose Hill set."[13] Frost is an occasional target of the British tabloid press, in part thanks to her friendship with model Kate Moss, and also her own comments that “Men, being in love, being treated like a princess” have always been “a huge force” in her life.[1]
