As for getting pregnant... condoms have a 12% failure rate. If that's all you use--- you're looking at a 1 in 10 chance of getting pregnant. Is that safer? Yes..
Is that safe? No..
For pregnancy... use multiple methods. It will decrease your chances of getting pregnant greatly. Diaphragm, pull-out, condom, spermicide, the pill, Fertility Awareness Method, etc... use as many as you can, and you will be "safer.".

There is no such thing as 'safe sex.' COndoms break way to much. Condoms can come off. Trust me trying to get a condom out of vaginal cavity is not easy or fun..
