Julius Caesar (who was not an emperor) was the first Roman leader who was deified by the senate after his death. After that a number of emperors were deified after their death: Augustus, Claudius, Vespasian, Titus, Nerva, Trajan Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, Lucius Verus, Marcus Aurelius, Pertinax, Septimius Severus and Severus Alexander.

A number of women who were wives, mothers, sisters or daughters of emperors were also deified: Livia Drusilla, Julia Drusilla, Sabina Poppaea, Claudia, Marciana, Matidia, Plotina and Sabina.
