They didn't.
They are called "pince-nez", not "prince-nez". Pince-nez is French for "pinched nose".
That was the unhelpful jerk answer. I bet that guy doesn't get out much (or in for that matter).
Anyway, the name comes from the French: pincer, to pinch, and nez, nose
