Protect from loss or liability; indemnify; guaranty. 50 N.W. 496.

In contract law, the phrase is used to signify a commitment by one party to make good or repay another party to an agreement in the event of a specified loss. The agreement commits the obligor to reimburse the obligee if the obligee suffers the stated loss, and not to bear the loss in the first instance. Thus, where a lease states, "the lessee [tenant] shall save harmless the lessor [landlord] against claims for injuries to persons on the premises," the lessee is required to reimburse the lessor in the event such a claim is successfully prosecuted by an injured third party and damages are recovered against the lessor.
