Dictionary: sca·lar   (skā'lər, -lär') pronunciation
n.
    1. A quantity, such as mass, length, or speed, that is completely specified by its magnitude and has no direction.
    2. Mathematics. A number, numerical quantity, or element in a field.
  1. A device that yields an output equal to the input multiplied by a constant, as in a linear amplifier.
adj.

A term synonymous in mathematics with “real” in real number or real function. The magnitude of a vector two units in length is the real number of scalar 2. The dot or scalar product of two vectors is the product of three real numbers associated with them (the magnitude of the first vector times the magnitude of the second, times the cosine of the angle between them) and is therefore a scalar. If in the functional relationships S = S(s, y, z), F = F(x, y, z), S is a real number and F is a vector, then S(s, y, z) is a scalar function but F(x, y, z) is a vector function. See also Calculus of vectors.

A single item or value. Contrast with vector and array, which are made up of multiple values.

A physical quantity that can be described completely in terms of its magnitude (e.g. length, mass, speed, time, and volume). Compare vector.

scalar, quantity or number possessing only sign and magnitude, e.g., the real numbers (see number), in contrast to vectors and tensors; scalars obey the rules of elementary algebra. Many physical quantities have scalar values, e.g., length, area, mass, energy, and electric charge. Such quantities as velocity, force, momentum, and spin are vectors and follow different algebraic rules.

In electrocardiography, a single magnitude value of a recorded electrical potential, expressed in millivolts.
