A type of semiconductor architecture that uses a junction of metal and n-type silicon. It is used to make diodes and MESFET transistors (see FET). Named after German physicist Walter Schottky (1886-1976) whose research in vacuum tubes and semiconductors led to discoveries such as the thermal noise in a vacuum tube and inventions such as the tetrode. See n-type silicon.
