The Scottish Executive (as it was known then) was established in 1999.

The Secretary of State for Scotland is head of the Scotland Office. The primary responsibility is to liaise between the Westminster and Scottish government. Prior to devolution, the Scottish Secretary has seen most of its power transferred to the Scottish Executive.
