In "To Kill A Mockingbird", Scout feels school is "twelve years of unrelieved boredom. " Scout is obviously an intellectually gifted child, but she lived in a time when there was no advanced or gifted program. As a result, Scout does not receive the intellectual stimulus she craves and ends up feeling bored.

Scout gets in trouble for already knowing how to read and write, which upsets Miss Caroline because it goes against the way she wants to teach. She scolds Scout for it.
