Scrupulosity is a relatively common form of obsessive–compulsive disorder[1] that is characterized by pathological guilt about religious or moral issues. It is often highly distressing, and attributed to compulsive observance of religious rituals.[2]

The term is derived from the Latin scrupulum, a sharp stone, implying a stabbing pain on the conscience.[2]

As a personality trait, scrupulosity (or scrupulousness) is a recognized diagnostic criterion for obsessive–compulsive personality disorder.[3]
