There are several 'famous' opera companies in the United States, including but not limited to, The New York Metropolitan Opera, The San Francisco Opera, The Houston Opera, The Chicago Opera and so forth.

I accompanied him in a recital at Seattle. He was very easy to work with. This was in 1978. Last I heard, he was teaching at Indiana University, among other things.
