Functional or responsibility area within a business that can be reported upon separately. The assets, revenue, and earnings of a segment are operationally distinguishable. Examples of business segments are division, department, product line, and geographic area.

To experience a segmentation fault. Confusingly, this is often pronounced more like the noun ‘segment’ than like mainstream v. segment; this is because it is actually a noun shorthand that has been verbed.


Plane figure contained by a straight line and part of the circumference of a circle. A segmental arch is therefore the shape of a segment, formed by its centre far below the springing-line of the arch.

A component of a business that is or will generate revenues and costs related to operations. Financial information should be available for a segment's activities and performance and must also be periodically reviewed by the company's management before a decision can be made regarding the amount of capital that will be given to the segment for a particular operating period.

Investopedia Says:
For accounting purposes, FASB's SFAS 131 is the definitive source when it comes to accounting practices involving segments.

An example of a segment would be XYZ Corp.'s widget division because it generates its own revenue as a result of selling widgets and incurs expenses as a result of the costs involved with producing this product.

Keep in mind that not every component of a company constitutes a segment. For example, XYZ Corp.'s marketing division would not be considered a segment because it does not perform operations that directly earn revenue.

A segment is an internal slice of a fruit. A segment is a compartment inside a fruit where a separation such as a membrane isolates one edible portion from another. Seeds are often found within. Albedo is the white soft cushion-like substance underlying the zest or the outer layer. At the center of concentric segments as in citrus fruits, a pith is located. This pith is made of the same substance as the albedo. See Albedo.
