Seme

seme, an elementary unit of meaning, usually a defining feature or characteristic of something. A basic description of a person as, e.g., ‘white, male, grey‐haired, clean‐shaven’ is a listing of semes. Some structuralist studies of fiction have analysed fictional characters in terms of the presence or absence of given semes.
