One that sequences, as:

1. An electronic device or software program that can be instructed to order and modify digitally stored musical sounds for playback, as through a synthesizer.
2. An apparatus for determining the order of constituents in a biological polymer, usually DNA or protein. In this sense also called sequenator.

A hardware device or software application that allows for the composition, editing and playback of MIDI sound sequences. Media player applications can play MIDI sound files, but creating and modifying MIDI files requires a sequencer.
