Patient, Serge (b. 1934). Writer, educator, and politician from French Guiana. A collection of poems, Guyane pour tout dire (1980), contains a semiautobiographical sequence of lyric and protest pieces, showing fidelity to French Guiana and an alert interest in its multilingual heritage. A historical nouvelle, Le Nègre du gouverneur (1972), is set in the time of Victor Hugues, governor of Guyane from 1800 to 1809.
