how to spell it. But that was true of everyone--nobody knew how to
spell anyone's name. We have settled on the spelling "Shakespeare"
because that is the one found most often in his published works.
The spelling "Shakespear" is also common: that's what's on his
grant of arms. On his funerary monument it is spelled
"Shakspeare"
