Shaun Donovan became Barack Obama's Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in 2009. He heads the agency that promotes home ownership, oversees public housing, and grants federal funds to local community planning and development organizations. From 2004 to 2009, Donovan headed New York City's Department of Housing Preservation and Development, overseeing a $7.5 billion program to build and preserve affordable housing. Before that he managed federal lending and affordable housing investments for Prudential Mortgage Capital Company; was as a deputy assistant secretary at HUD in the Bill Clinton administration, responsible for privately owned multifamily housing; and worked for a nonprofit lender and affordable-housing developer in New York City.

Donovan received a bachelor's degree in engineering from Harvard University in 1987 and returned to earn two master's degrees in 1995, in architecture and in public administration... He is married to Liza Gilbert, a landscape architect. They have two sons, Milo and Lucas.

Shaun L.S. Donovan (born January 24, 1966[2]) is the United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, serving in the cabinet of President Barack Obama. Prior to this he headed the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development. On December 13, 2008, in his weekly national radio address, President Barack Obama announced that he would appoint Donovan to his cabinet.[3] He was confirmed by the U.S. Senate through unanimous consent on January 22, 2009[4] and sworn-in on January 26.[1]

Biography

Born in New York, Donovan earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from Harvard University, graduating from Harvard College in 1987, and earning a Master of Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government and a master's in architecture at the Graduate School of Design in 1995.[5]

During the Clinton administration and the transition to the Bush administration, Donovan was Deputy Assistant Secretary for Multifamily Housing at HUD, and was acting FHA commissioner. He became Commissioner of the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development in 2004.[5][6]

During the 2008 United States Presidential campaign, Donovan worked for the Obama campaign.[2]
