Biography

Though he would set the screen ablaze with his role as Iceman (aka Bobby Drake) in director Bryan Singer's X2, teen actor Shawn Ashmore has been appearing frequently in film since his cinematic debut in the 1991 comedy drama Married to It. Born one-minute after twin brother Aaron in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada, in October of 1979, Ashmore was raised in Toronto, British Columbia, and Alberta, where he would attend primary school at Leo Nickerson Elementary before heading to Turner Fenton High School in Brampton, Ontario. His mother's association with the Multiple Birth Association eventually led to a career in front of the camera for both Shawn and brother Aaron, and before long the siblings were appearing in numerous television commercials. Following his debut in Married to It, Ashmore would go on to meatier roles in such made-for-television features as Guitarman (1994) and Promise the Moon (1997), often joking that casting agents would have to flip a coin to chose between himself and his brother. As his career continued to build momentum with roles in such features as Strike! (1998) and on television's Animorphs, Ashmore was elated to find that he had been cast in a minor, albeit pivotal role in 2000's X-Men. Ashmore gained even more exposure with his subsequent role on The Disney Channel series In a Hearbeat. Always dedicated to making his performances as convincing as possible, Ashmore attended military school and received voice lessons for three months while preparing for his role in the 2002 made-for-television feature Cadet Kelly. Likewise, Ashmore's preparation for his continuing role as Iceman in X2 included a strict, six-month physical training regiment in addition to a restrictive diet in which he was allowed to consume no alcohol. Fluent in French, some of Ashmore's favorite pastime activities include snowboarding and playing guitar. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Biography

Early life

Ashmore was born in Richmond, British Columbia,[1] the son of Linda, a homemaker, and Rick Ashmore, a manufacturing engineer. He was raised in Brampton, Ontario where he attended Turner Fenton Secondary School. His identical twin brother, Aaron Ashmore, is also an actor. Aaron and Shawn have played twins in several movies, but have also pursued roles independently. Aaron is slightly taller than Shawn and, according to Aaron, Shawn often gets cast as the nice guy while Aaron himself is cast as the bully.

Career

Ashmore's most famous role may be as Iceman in X-Men and its sequels X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand. While many of the minor characters were portrayed by different actors, Ashmore was kept for all the movies since his character was major in the first movie, unlike Shadowcat who had minor screen time in the first and second films. Ashmore will reprise his role as Iceman in the animated series The Super Hero Squad Show.

Ashmore starred as Cadet Major Brad Rigby in Cadet Kelly, a Disney Channel original film which aired in 2002 and he also guest-starred as Eric Summers in two episodes of Smallville, a series on which his brother later got the role of Jimmy Olsen. Ashmore also had starring roles on Animorphs as Jake Berenson and In a Heartbeat as Tyler Connell.

In December 2004, Ashmore was cast in the lead role in the SciFi Channel mini series Legend of Earthsea, based on the novels by Ursula K. Le Guin. He played the role of Ged, a young wizard-in-training, who takes advice from Ogion (Danny Glover) and falls in love with Tenar (Kristin Kreuk), the protege of the High Priestess of the Tombs of Atuan (Isabella Rossellini). In 2005, Ashmore starred in a CTV TV movie about Terry Fox's historic run across Canada, which aired in September of that year. His most recent project was starring as one of the leads in the 2008 horror film The Ruins.

Personal life

He has his grandfather's initials tattooed on his wrist, as does his twin brother Aaron.

Shawn enjoys spending time with his brother, listening to music, playing guitar and snowboarding. He is also fluent in French. Shawn has one pet, Jessica, a golden retriever, that he got from his grandmother when he was nine.[citation needed]

Shawn previously dated actress Michelle Trachtenberg.[2]
