Biography

A professional model since her teens, Shelley Hack made her film bow in Woody Allen's Annie Hall (1977). She's the blonde passerby on the street who confesses to Woody that she's too shallow to understand what he's saying. We heard (and saw) a lot more from Hack when, in 1979, she replaced Kate Jackson on the long-running TV jigglefest Charlie's Angels. Shelley played Tiffany Welles for a single season, until she herself was replaced by Tanya Roberts. Shelley Hack survived on screen a lot longer than many people would have predicted back in 1980, co-starring in the TV weeklies Cutter to Houston (1983) and Jack and Mike (1986-87), and delivering an excellent performance in Martin Scorcese's controversial theatrical film King of Comedy (1982). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Biography

Hack was reportedly born in White Plains, New York (according to an article by Cheryl Lavin that appeared in the September 14, 1986 edition of the Chicago Tribune) and raised in nearby Greenwich, Connecticut. She graduated from Greenwich Academy and Smith College, the latter with a history degree. She began her career as a teen fashion model and became the face of Revlon's Charlie perfume in the mid 1970s, which gave her national exposure on television. Hack ranked among the top models of her day, widely known to the public and able to negotiate previously unheard-of deals with cosmetics companies of the time.[citation needed] In October 1981, Life magazine proclaimed her one of the million-dollar faces in the beauty industry.[citation needed]

Her feature film debut was in Woody Allen's award winning film Annie Hall (1977), as "Street Stranger." She is perhaps best known for her role as Tiffany Welles in the television series Charlie's Angels for one season (1979-80). Unforunately, the series experienced a significant ratings decline during Hack's time on the show, and the actress was dismissed in early 1980; her tumultuous tenure would be well documented in The Charlie's Angels Casebook, a 2000 book by David Hofstede and Jack Condon (ISBN number 0938817205). Following Hack's involuntary departure from Charlie's Angels, the actress would go on to play a variety of minor roles, such as in Martin Scorsese's film The King of Comedy (1983). She also had a role in the cult horror film The Stepfather. She had several guest appearances in film and television up until 1997, when she retired from acting.

In January 2008, Hack made an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show. The episode, "Classic Americana",[1] featured Hack as the Charlie perfume model in this famous 1976 television ad with Bobby Short at the piano.[2][3] "It was a time when women were changing" Hack stated to Oprah Winfrey. "Women looked at [the ad] and said, 'I want to be like that.'" Referring to the later Revlon commercials and Charlie's Angels, Hack stated "I was lucky. There were two things I was in that were about making women feel a little more empowered".[1]

Hack is married to Harry Winer, with whom she has one daughter.
