Shevi'it

("Sabbatical Year"). Fifth tractate of Order Zera'Im in the Mishnah. Its ten chapters discuss the laws relating to letting agricultural land in Erets Israel lie fallow during the seventh year (cf. Ex. 23:10-11; Lev. 25:2-7; Deut. 15:1-3). These prohibitions cover sowing, pruning, reaping, gathering, selling for profit the produce that grows by itself, etc. The Mishnah also deals with the laws of the "release of debts" during the seventh year (see Sabbatical Year). The subject matter is amplified in the Jerusalem Talmud and the Tosefta.

Shevi'it (Hebrew: שביעית‎, lit. "Seventh Year") is the fifth tractate of Seder Zeraim ("Order of Seeds") of the Mishnah and of the Talmud. It deals with all laws of allowing the land to rest in the seventh year, the laws of Shemittah produce and the remission of debts. It also discusses the 50th year, known as "Yovel", where all slaves must be set free, and all land must be returned to original owner from the time of Joshua when tribes where given out. This tracate has many applications today in Israel where "Shemittah" is still being observed. From September 2007- September 2008 was a "Shemittah" year and last one before that was in 2000-2001.
