The most famous attraction of Okinawa is the Shuri Castle. The
Shuri Castle, or Shurijo, was the administrative center and home of
the Ryukyu kings in the centuries before Okinawa became a
prefecture in 1879. It is named after the former capital of the
Ryukyu Kingdom. The Shuri Castle was destroyed by wars and fires
many times over the years, but has been reconstructed as recently
as 1992.
