Grossman, Sid (1913-55), American photographer. Co-founder with Sol Libsohn of the Photo League, he played numerous roles throughout its existence (1936-51). He organized classes in documentary photography, founded the Documentary Group; served on the executive board; was a reviewer, writer, and editor for the league's newsletter Photo Notes. He regularly defended photography as an art form, a documentary record, and a means of mass communication. His 1940 photographs of labour union activity led to FBI investigations and the blacklisting of the league as a communist front in 1947.
