Sign languages are now written languages just like many spoken languages. Several writing systems exist for writing movement-based languages. SignWriting, invented by Valerie Sutton in 1974 is the only one that has become an everyday writing system in several countries. HamNoSys was created in Europe to write European sign languages, Stokoe notation was created to prove that American Sign Language is a language with its own grammar, but only SignWriting was created on the basis of human movement so that it can write any sign language in the world. It is used by experts in more than 40 countries at last count and is being taught at the University level in Brazil, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Malta, Ethiopia and some pilot projects in the United States. Symposia created by linguists throughout the world were started in 2015. SignWriting projects have been a part of the Theoretical Issues in Sign Language Research since 2000.

ASL does not have its own widely accepted written form, but glossing (writing down ASL signs in English) is commonly used for teaching and analyzing the language. Some systems, like SignWriting, have been developed to represent ASL visually, but they are not commonly used among the Deaf community.

Billy T James was a NZ Maori musician and comedian. During his lifetime he lived in various places throughout NZ. He was born in Karapiro Valley, Waikato and was adopted out to a Maori couple from Leamington, Cambridge. When he was 10 years old the family moved to Whangarei, NZ and here he completed his schooling. In 1966 he moved to Auckland to start an apprenticeship in signwriting. Becoming quickly bored with this he did a short stint in the army to gain credit in his apprenticeship before returning North to Whangarei.

After a few months he again left Whangarei, eventually settling in Auckland until he died in 1991 following heart failure.
