Silvanus

(European mythology)

The Roman god of untilled land, an uncertain force in daily life. He had to be carefully propitiated whenever inroads were made into his domain. Silvanus is the antithesis of Flora, the jolly Italian goddess of flowering and blossoming plants.

also n. Roman Mythology
A god of forests, fields, and herding.

Silvanus, ‘of the wood’, in Roman religion, the god of the wild land beyond the boundaries of the cultivated fields. He thus resembled the Greek satyrs or Silenus, and was sometimes identified with them, but more often with the god Pan. His cult was regarded as very ancient, and it was important to propitiate him before violating his territory, e.g. cutting down trees.
