Biography

Drummer Simon Kirke kept the beat for two of the 70's most popular bluesy hard rockers -- Free and Bad Company. Born in London, England on July 28, 1949, Kirke's family didn't include any musicians, but an interest in music developed at a young age, when Kirke sang in his school's choir. Shortly after becoming a teenager, the Beatles perked Kirke's interest in rock music, as he picked up the drums -- leading to a gig with a local band called the Maniacs, which saw Kirke supply drums and lead vocals (something quite uncommon at the time). Kirke worked out a deal with his parents after graduating high school, that if he couldn't ‘make it' as a drummer in a band within a two year period, that he would begin a college career. Just a few months before the self-imposed deadline was about to creep up, Kirke landed a gig with a group called the Black Cat Bones. The drummer befriended the group's talented guitarist, Paul Kossoff, who in turn convinced Kirke to leave the group with him and begin a new outfit with singer Paul Rodgers. With ex-John Mayall's Bluesbreakers bassist Andy Fraser signed on as well, Free was officially formed in 1968. Mixing blues with hard rock, the group would prove to be quite influential, especially on the strength of their classic 1970 release, Fire and Water, and its strutting, anthemic hit single, "All Right Now." Although the band showed great promise, a dangerous drug habit began to hamper Kossoff, which led to tension within the group, and after several albums, its break-up in 1973 (sadly, Kossoff would die just three years later). It didn't take Kirke long to find another gig however, as he joined Rodgers in a new band, Bad Company, which was quite similar stylistically to Free. Joined by ex-King Crimson bassist Boz Burrell and ex-Mott the Hoople guitarist Mick Ralphs, Bad Company was one of the first group's signed to Led Zeppelin's record label, Swan Song. Their resulting debut album, 1974's Bad Company, would go on to become one of hard rock's all-time classics, as it birthed such long-standing rock radio standards as "Can't Get Enough," "Ready for Love," and the title track. While Bad Company never managed to top their debut, the group went on to become one of the decade's top rock outfits, before splitting up in 1982 (the group would reunite later in the decade without Rodgers, with varying results, before Rodgers rejoined during the late ‘90s). In addition to his work with Free and Bad Company, Kirke has guested on a long list of recordings by other artists over the years, including albums by Jim Capaldi, Mick Jones, Mick Ralphs, Ringo Starr, John Wetton, and Ron Wood, among countless others. In 2003, Kirke launched his very first solo tour, and participated in the fan-based ‘Rock N' Roll Fantasy Camp,' alongside other classic rock musicians. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide

Biography

Kirke spent his early years living in the borderlands of Wales. Leaving school at 17, he returned to London and set about finding a drumming job in the booming blues scene. After a fruitless 18 months he was resigned to returning to the country when he met Paul Kossoff who was playing in a band called Black Cat Bones. Kirke was offered the drumming position in the band for which he played for six months. Among others, Kirke played Hayman drums.

Simon and Paul Kossoff left the band and with Paul Rodgers and Andy Fraser formed Free. In the four years Free were together they had an enormous influence on many bands on both sides of the Atlantic. Their biggest hit "All Right Now", a number one hit in more than 20 territories and recognised by ASCAP( American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers) in 1990 for more than 1,000,000 radio plays in the US by late 1989, and in 2000 an award was given to Paul Rodgers by the British Music Industry when "All Right Now" passed 2,000,000 radio plays in the UK.

After the disbanding of Free in 1973, Simon and Paul Rodgers again teamed up to form Bad Company. They were joined by guitarist Mick Ralphs (Mott the Hoople) and bassist Boz Burrell (King Crimson). Bad Company became one of the biggest and best live acts, selling approximately 30 million singles and albums.

After Bad Company ended in 1982, Kirke was briefly invoved with another band, Wildlife. Their album was produced by former Bad Company bandmate Ralphs. He returned to Bad Company when it reunited in 1986.

As well as touring with Ringo Starr's All Star Band on three occasions, Kirke is an accomplished songwriter, releasing Seven Rays of Hope in 2005. He has also worked with Wilson Pickett, Bo Diddley, Ray Charles, Jerry Lee Lewis, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, and Eric Clapton.

In 1980 Kirke played drums alongside Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham for their two song encore in Munich.

A governor on the board of NARAS (the Grammy Award Committee), Kirke lives in Manhattan with his wife, Lorraine, and his four children. His daughter Domino is trying to follow her father into a musical career.

Kirke made an instruction DVD of hits from Bad Company and Free, entitled Lessons from a Legend: Simon Kirke. The DVD was produced by Rockstarz in 2006.

Kirke is a fan of Aretha Franklin and states he has most of her albums.[citation needed]

Kirke is a recurring counsellor at Rock 'n Roll Fantasy Camp.

He toured with Bad Company in 2009 which was a well-reviewed and regarded tour.

He has been playing with New York City rock band Zeta Vang www.zetavang.com as a side project.
