Buddhism Dictionary: Six Schools of Nara Buddhism

Six Buddhist schools which developed in Japan during the Nara period. (1) The Sanron school focused on San-lun teachings; (2) the Kegon school took up Hua-yen studies; (3) the Ritsu school concentrated on monastic precepts and ordinations; (4) the Jōjitsu school studied Satyasiddhi doctrines (see Satyasiddhi śāstra); (5) the Hossō school dealt with Fa-hsiang teachings; and (6) the Kusha school read the Abhidharma-kośa, a Hīnayāna work attributed to the Indian philosopher Vasubandhu.
