Biography

Skee-Lo was an anomaly in the rap world of the '90s: instead of spinning violent gangsta tales or extolling the virtues of marijuana, Skee's songs were profanity-free, good-time stories with a self-deprecating sense of humor. Skee-Lo was born in Poughkeepsie, NY, and moved to Riverside, CA, at age nine. He was turned on to rap by Kurtis Blow records, admiring their down-to-earth quality. His "I Wish" single, with a video that parodied Forrest Gump, became a huge hit on radio and MTV during the summer of 1995, and his identically titled debut album was released shortly thereafter. Five years later, Skee-Lo resurfaced to issue his long-awaited follow-up I Can't Stop. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

Releases

Skee-Lo's single "Top of the Stairs" was featured in the ending credits as well as the soundtrack to the 1994 film Money Train. He had a hit single in the same year with "I Wish", which reached #13 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, and was hugely successful in much of Europe. "I Wish" was produced by Walter "Kandor" Kahn, who released the single on his L.A.-based Sunshine Records. Kahn also produced Skee-Lo's first album. The single was reissued, along with the album on the combined Sunshine and Scotti Bros. label.

Skee-Lo also recorded a cover of the Schoolhouse Rock! song "The Tale of Mr. Morton", which taught sentence structure (subject, verb, predicate). The song appears on the compilation album, Schoolhouse Rock! Rocks.[2]

He also co-wrote "I'll Be Your Everything" by boy band Youngstown. The song is featured on the Inspector Gadget soundtrack.

Skee-Lo is scheduled to release a new comeback album in 2009 labelled "Overdose" after a nine-year absence.

Music video

The comedic music video to the song "I Wish", directed by Marty Thomas, gained popularity on MTV.[1]
