  • Born: 20 January 1970
  • Birthplace: Lynchburg, Virginia
  • Best Known As: Star of the sci-fi TV show Jericho

Name at birth: Brian Ray Trout

His roles in the horror films Scream and The Craft made 1996 the year Skeet Ulrich captured the hearts of excitable teens. His appearance in Scream as Billy, the boyfriend of Neve Campbell's plucky Sidney, was a particular success. After appearing in As Good As it Gets (1997, starring Jack Nicholson) and The Newton Boys (1998, directed by Richard Linklater), Ulrich was being touted as part of yet another new generation of young actors on the way up, but his career somehow hit a plateau. He played notorious hacker Kevin Mitnick in the 2000 film Takedown, and after a number of forgettable films, including Soul Assassin (2001) and Nobody's Baby (2001), he found work in the short-lived TV series Miracle (2003). He had more success as the star of the post-apocalyptic drama Jericho, which ran from 2006-08.

Ulrich got his last name from his stepfather after his parents were divorced and his mother remarried. His stepfather is Nascar driver D.K. Ulrich... He told Interview magazine in 1996, "I was nicknamed 'Skeeter' in Little League because I was small and fast, like a mosquito flying across the outfield"... He was born in Virginia but raised in Concord, a town near Charlotte, North Carolina... Ulrich was married to actress Georgina Cates from 1997 until their divorce in 2005. They had twins born in 2001: son Jakob Dylan and daughter Naiia Rose... Ulrich looks just a little like fellow actor Johnny Depp.

"I'm disappointed in acting as a craft. I want everything to go back to Orson Welles and fake noses and changing your voice. It's become so much about personality."

Biography

From his first onscreen appearance opposite Winona Ryder in the 1996 coming-of-age tale Boys, Skeet Ulrich has invited comparisons with actors ranging from Johnny Depp to James Dean. With his cool stare and glacier-cut cheekbones, Ulrich has repeatedly been hailed as one of Young Hollywood's hottest, brightest stars, an accolade he has attempted to live up to with steady, if uneven, work.

Born Brian Ray Ulrich on January 20, 1970, the actor was raised in North Carolina by his divorced father. Ulrich acquired his unusual nickname from a Little League coach who dubbed him "Skeeter" because he was small, like a mosquito. Following high school, Ulrich enrolled at New York University where he was "discovered" by playwright David Mamet, who invited him to join his celebrated Atlantic Theater Company as an apprentice. Ulrich performed in a number of productions, and during one of them, he was spotted by director Stacy Cochran, who cast him in an ABC Afterschool Special. Cochran then gave Ulrich his first screen role in Boys, in which he was cast as Winona Ryder's brutish boyfriend. 1996 proved to be a prolific year for the newly discovered actor, who followed his debut with performances in The Craft (which also featured his future Scream co-star, Neve Campbell), the Sharon Stone prison drama Last Dance, Albino Alligator, and, most notably, Scream, in which Ulrich played Campbell's unhinged boyfriend.

1997 emerged as a quieter year for Ulrich, who appeared only in a small part (that, it should be noted, was much larger before the tyranny of the cutting-room floor) in James L. Brooks' critically acclaimed As Good As It Gets, and in the leading role in the largely unseen Touch. 1998 saw Ulrich take part in two more films: the obscure Vietnam drama A Soldier's Sweetheart (in which Ulrich starred with his future wife, Georgina Cates) and Richard Linklater's much-anticipated The Newton Boys, a film expected to mine box-office gold in part because of its ridiculously photogenic cast, which, in addition to Ulrich, included Matthew McConaughey, Ethan Hawke, and Vincent D'Onofrio. Despite such a powerful combination of tanned skin, flawless dentistry, and charmingly exuded testosterone, the film failed to find favor among critics or audiences. Ulrich's next feature, 1999's Chill Factor, met a similar fate, causing some to ponder what would come next for an actor who just three years earlier had been toasted as one of the most tantalizing samples that Hollywood had to offer. Ulrich fared somewhat better with Ride With the Devil: a Civil War drama directed by Ang Lee and co-starring Tobey Maguire, Jonathan Rhys Myers, Jeffrey Wright, and Jewel, it received a moderately favorable critical response. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide

Biography

Early life

Ulrich was born Bryan Ray Trout in Lynchburg, Virginia and was raised in Concord, North Carolina by his mother, Carolyn Elaine Wax (née Rudd), who owns the special-events marketing agency Sports Management Group. Ulrich's father is a restaurateur[1] and his first stepfather was former NASCAR driver and team owner D. K. Ulrich. His mother has since re-married to Edward Lewis Wax.[2][3] Ulrich's uncle is NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Ricky Rudd (who is his mother's brother)[4] and his maternal grandfather was Alvin Ray Rudd, Sr., the president of Al Rudd Auto Parts.[5] The nickname "Skeet" originated from the nickname "Skeeter" he was given by his Little League coach because of his small stature. Along with his slight frame he had poor health, including numerous bouts with pneumonia, and underwent open heart surgery at the age of 10.

Ulrich graduated from Northwest Cabarrus High School, where he was a soccer standout. After initially enrolling at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington to study Marine Biology, he switched to New York University, and was subsequently noticed by playwright David Mamet.

Career

In his earliest screen appearances, he was an uncredited extra in films Weekend at Bernie's and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. After joining the Atlantic Theater Company as an apprentice, Ulrich performed with the group, which got him noticed yet again, this time by director Stacy Cochran. She cast him in a CBS School Break Special. With her help he also received his first notable role on screen in 1996 as the loutish boyfriend of Winona Ryder in Boys. That same year he appeared in The Craft with Neve Campbell. He starred with Neve Campbell again in Wes Craven's hit slasher film Scream released later that same year which became his best known role. In 1998 he starred in The Newton Boys.

Ulrich starred alongside Cuba Gooding Jr. in the action film Chill Factor. He had a small but pivotal role as an emotionally conflicted gay hustler in As Good as It Gets. He starred as Juvenal, a young man with stigmata and healing powers in the Paul Schrader film Touch, and he appeared in Ride with the Devil, an American Civil War drama directed by Ang Lee. In 2000, he played computer hacker Kevin Mitnick in the film Takedown.

On television, Ulrich starred in the short-lived ABC series Miracles, and appeared in TNT's multiple Emmy-nominated miniseries Into the West. In 2005, Ulrich acted with Keri Russell in the TV movie The Magic of Ordinary Days. Ulrich most recently starred as Jake Green on the CBS post-apocalyptic drama Jericho, which premiered on September 20, 2006, and ended its run on March 25, 2008.

Back, from Storyline Entertainment & CBS Paramount Network, is a 2009 CBS telelvision pilot which centers on a man (Skeet Ulrich) who disappeared in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks- but who suddenly shows up, eight years later. Project follows the man as he reconnects with his family and adjusts to a world that has dramatically changed. Dean Widenmann wrote the project and will serve as supervising producer, while Storyline's Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will be Executive Producers.

Skeet will guest for three episodes of CSI: NY as a complex and deeply disturbed killer. The episodes began airing October 7, 2009.[6]

Personal life

In 1997, Ulrich married English actress Georgina Cates, whom he met at an Academy Award party. Their wedding was a small ceremony held on their farmland in Virginia, with the only guests being the preacher and their canine companions. They have twins: a son Jakob Dylan, and a daughter, Naiia Rose, born in 2001. Skeet and Georgina divorced in 2005, citing irreconcilable differences. They share joint custody of their children.
