A poured concrete building foundation. Most houses that are built on slabs lack basements.
Example: Most new houses in the Southwest are built on slabs. Wooden forms are used to contain the concrete, which is poured from a cement mixer, until it cures. Building codes govern the minimum thickness of the slab.
